So where did he come from? Before becoming the croc king of Green Island, Cassius was living in the Finnis River, just south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. As an apex predator, this big crocodile was getting into all sorts of trouble, from catching and eating cattle to attacking boat propellers. It is believed this is where and how he sustained his many battle scars, including losing his front left leg, part of his snout and around 15cm off the end of his tail. When he was captured, Cassius was trucked 3,000km over dusty roads to Cairns and then brought to Green Island by boat.
As well as being big and tough, Cassius is a truly beautiful animal, and his personality and appearance is unlike any other crocodile. Just by gazing at him you can tell he is wise in his old age, and he likes to keep a close watch on visitors, with his unflinching, golden eyes. You can spend as much time as you like with Cassius during the day, and learn more on a self-guided audio tour or by attending one of our presentations at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Seeing this living dinosaur in person will be one of the highlights of your time on Green Island.
